Mohammed Milhem, MBBS

Dr. Mohammed Milhem, respectfully known as Mo among his patients and colleagues, is a distinguished oncologist with an abundance of roles at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC). Graduating from Jordan University with his medical degree he continued his education at the University of Illinois where he completed an Internal Medicine Residency and fellowships in Hematology-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant. Currently, he serves as the Division Director of Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant within the Department of Internal Medicine. He is the Director of the Melanoma and Sarcoma Program and holds the Holden Chair of Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Milhem played a critical role in establishing the Sarcoma and Melanoma programs at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, which now sees 400patients annually. Beyond program development, he is a driving force behind the improvement of clinical trials. His creation of the Midwest Sarcoma Trials Partnership and Melanoma Midwest Partnership exemplifies his dedication to advancing clinical trial involvement and treatment options. Dr. Milhem established the Phase 1 Clinical Research Program in 2016 in Iowa. Since joining UIHC in 2007, he has overseen the initiation of 200 clinical trials, contributing significantly to the institution’s research initiatives.
Among Dr. Milhem’s numerous accolades, one of the most noteworthy is the Leonard Tow Humanism Award in Medicine, received in 2018. This recognition highlights Dr. Milhem’s exceptional compassion for patients and his unwavering commitment to the human side of medicine. Dr. Milhem’s influence extends beyond clinical expertise; his genuine empathy and curiosity in the field of oncology are contagious to those who work alongside him.
